Going Green with Bashaw Valley Greenhouse
I am sure all of you have heard the buzz word going around "Going Green". Here
at Bashaw Valley Greenhouse we are trying to do our part in recycling as well
as other aspects of going green. First of all most people think just throwing
your plastics in your recycling container is doing their part, unfortunately it is a
lot more complicated than that. Not only does everyone have to do there part in
recycling there also has to be a demand for that recycled product, rather than
burning it or ending up in a land fill some place. Most greenhouses are already
using containers made partially of post consumer recycled plastics. Bashaw
Valley Greenhouse is taking this a step further by now offering a cash credit of
$.25 per returned plastic heavy duty web flat/carrying tray which originated
from our greenhouse. Every heavy duty flat which is returned must be clean
and can not be cracked or damaged in any way! We also offered recycling for
#2 & #5 containers in 2007 through a program directed by Northwest Regional
Planning. Hopefully this program will continue for 2009 providing funding is
available. Please note that containers must be returned clean and placed in
correct container.

New Look for our Greenhouses
Out with the old and in with the new or is it new? In 2008 our two main houses
received a face lift. We purchased all new plastic benching for both houses
made of 100% Post Industrial Recycled plastic replacing the old concrete
blocks and wooden pallets. This improvement is not only more consumer and
employee friendly but also healthier for the plants.

Custom Moss Basket Growing Green Program
Another service which we offer at Bashaw Valley is your own personalized
custom moss basket grown to your specifications. This program is offered in
both 16" and 20" Braun wire baskets with a moss mat liner only. You can
choose from a variety of plants in many colors, from full sun to shade to
customize your basket. After enjoying your basket all summer long, you can
return the wire portion of your basket which will be replanted using a new liner.
In return you will receive a $5.00 credit when you pick up your newly grown
basket. These are large baskets which require a heavy support to hang from.
Many people have already taken advantage of this program and you are
welcome to join them. The City of Shell Lake baskets are a prime example of
our custom moss basket growing program. The city does a great job of
maintaining the baskets throughout the summer. This is one way in which all of
us can do our part in reusing or recycling of our containers and baskets.
Opening April 10th 2010 9:00 - 5:30 Mon.- Sat.
Sundays 10:00 - 3:00 During the month of May.

Organically grown Raspberries / Frozen Fruit
Bashaw Valley Farm & Greenhouse has always been known for its organically
grown blueberries. In 2009 we will also be offering u-pick raspberries as well
as picked ones, which we had in 2008, after tripling our raspberry acreage.
We are also experimenting with sour cherries, pears, peaches, strawberries
and asparagus. After a bumper blueberry crop in 2008 we decided to try
freezing some blueberries for retail sales, which has gone over really well.
Weather permitting we hope to have both frozen Blueberries & Raspberries
available in 2009.

All Natural Grass Fed Home Grown Beef
Another new venture for 2009 will be experimenting with selling all natural
grass fed angus/cross bred beef, we have raised beef for a number of years
now but have always sold them as feeders(500-600#) in the past. After the
push for locally grown and healthier grass fed meat we decided to give this a
try. Beef will most likely be available later in the fall, if things go as planned.
New Mulch and Soil Bunkers
Another improvement for 2008 was the addition of bulk mulch and soil
bunker's. We now offer colored mulch as well as black dirt along with our
usual natural colored hardwood mulch in bulk. So bring your pickup or trailer
and we'll be glad to fill it up.
Additional parking spaces added and new look out
front to assist in customer convenience and
accessibility.
New for 2010 Bashaw Valley Farm is now Certified USDA Organic on all of our blueberry, raspberry, strawberry and asparagus production.
